Janet CoathupHi. My name is Janet Coathup. Seventeen years ago, I left my native Newfoundland to introduce the Music For Young Children program to Kingston and area students. In addition to establishing my own studio, I was the Eastern Ontario Co-ordinator, responsible for the training and development of over forty MYC teachers. As my own MYC enrollment grew, I concentrated on developing the program out of my studios at Renaissance Music. Today, I am pleased to be assisted by two additional teachers, Tanya Bezanson and Jennifer Allan. Together, we offer MYC classes from Monday through Saturday at many convenient times. My interest in music was first influenced by my parent’s love of singing and dancing. This encouraged me to pursue professional training in piano, voice and dance. During these years I was fortunate enough to apply my training by performing in a number of local and professional musical theatre productions. |
I completed Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education degrees from Memorial University in Newfoundland, Kodaly Pedagogical Training from the University of Calgary and Grade 9 Pianoforte from the Trinity College of Music, London, England. In addition to my 24 years of teaching the MYC program, I have over 20 years experience as an elementary and secondary school teacher. I am also a certified MYC teacher trainer and workshop clinician and have traveled throughout Canada and the United States training new Music For Young Children teachers. My philosophy towards teaching music is to make the experience both fun and enjoyable for the student and parent. I base my teaching on positive reinforcement and strongly encourage and support the spirit of cooperation offered in the group setting. The MYC program offers me the opportunity to combine my love of children, music and theatre in a creative and educational setting. Music For Young Children is the only child centred music learning system that integrates keyboard, creative movement, rhythm, singing, ear training, sight reading, music theory and composition. New MYC classes begin in September. Don’t miss out. You and your child will love the “happy habit of making music”. |
